Since 1985 the Fort McMurray Fire Fighters have held a Memorial Service to remember the fallen. Members of the association and the public gather to remember our brothers and sisters of the fire service who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the “line of duty”. Honour is paid to those members who lost their life and to those family members left behind.
In 2003 we paid respect to one of our own who died in the “line of duty”. Platoon Captain David Richard, one of the founding fathers of our local, passed away after suffering a heart attack while at work.
In September of 2004, Platoon Captain Richards name was placed on the International Association of Fire Fighters, Fallen Fire Fighters Wall of Honour in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
In 2007 the Fort McMurray Fire Fighters moved its memorial celebration to September 11th as Fallen Fighter Day. This falls in with the International Association of Fire Fighters goal to have all fire departments in North America recognize this day as the day of remembrance.
On February 23, 2011 Battalion Chief James Thomas Banting passed away becoming our 2nd “line of duty” death in our 35 years history.
The Fort McMurray Fire Fighters Association invites everyone to come out and show their respect to those that have fallen and to show their respect for those who lay their life on the line each time they answer the call to duty.
